Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash is a peak in a Range which forms part of the Trans-Himalaya in Tibet. It lies near the source of some of the longest rivers in Asia. These are the Indus River, the Sutlej River, the Brahmaputra River, and the Karnali River. In Buddhism, Hinduism, Bon and also in Jainism mount Kailash is regarded as sacred. The mountain lies near Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal in Tibet autonomous Region, China.

Four of South Asia’s greatest rivers also have thier sources nearby. the base of mount Kailash are the  lakes Rakshas Tal and Manasarovar.

Pilgrimage

Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to the mountain therefore following a tradition going back many years in time. Pilgrims of several religions also believe that circumambulating Mount Kailash on foot is a holy ritual that will bring good fortune. Hindus and Buddhists always make the peregrination in a clockwise direction. Followers of the Jain and Bon religions conversely circumambulate the mountain in a counter clockwise direction. The path around Mount Kailash is 52 km (32 mi) long. Some pilgrims believe that the entire walk around Kailash should be made in a single day. This is a demanding undertaking.

Lake Manasarovar

Visitors may also wish to view Lake Manasarovar.

Lake Manasarovar lies at 4,590 m (15,060 ft) above mean sea level and is therefore it is at relatively high elevation for a large freshwater lake.  On the mostly saline lake-studded Tibetan Plateau. It  is relatively round in shape with the circumference of 88 km . Its depth reaches a maximum of 90 m and its surface area is 320 km2 . Lake Manasarovar ultimately overflows in to lake Rakshastal which is a salt-water endorheic lake.
