Everest Three Passes Trek (19 Days)

This 3 passes trek, in the Khumbu region of Nepal, is the ultimate mountain journey. It is exclusively designed for adventure seeking trekkers and offers the highest level of thrill and challenge. This trail therefore offers a wonderful opportunity for trekkers to experience the demanding high passes of the Everest region. These are:

  • Renjo La (5,360m),
  • Cho-la (5,420m)
  • Kongma La (5,535m)

This route heads towards Everest base camp and views of  the worlds highest mountain!   Kongma La, discovered by Sherpa’s, is the highest among the passes.  while Renjo La is the smallest.

The route affords magnificent views of four of the world’s eight highest peaks. These are:-

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), you will be greeted by one of our company representatives who will further escort you to the hotel. Later that day (if possible) or the following day, a meeting is scheduled at our head office to brief you the details of your upcoming trek. Here, you will also be introduced to your trekking guides and Sherpa’s. If your flight arrives on time, a welcome dinner is also scheduled for you at one of the most popular local restaurant where you can enjoy Nepali food along with a glimpse of cultural music and ethnic dance. On request, dinner can also be postponed to the following day (as per your convenience).

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, itself offers a wide range of unique historical, natural and cultural sites. You will be guided to some of these sites for the purpose of sightseeing. The sites include the World heritage sites like Kathmandu Durbar Square – one of the most important historical structure that offers eye appealing architectural wonders, the Pashupatinath temple – a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva (the lord that holds the power of destruction), Swyambhunath (Monkey Temple) and the Boudhanath Stupa – dedicated to Lord Buddha. However, you also have an option to skip one of these sites and visit another World Heritage site, ‘Patan Durbar Square’ along with Mahabouddha Temple, Kumbeshwor Temple, Krishna Temple and Golden Temple that simply offers some of the historical masterpieces to the connoisseurs of art. After spending 3-4 hours observing these beautiful sites, we will meet one more time to finalize your clothing and trekking gears (sleeping bag, down jacket and trekking boots). The evening will be spent in Kathmandu.

All the flights to Lukla are scheduled early in the morning. Hence, you will be escorted (in a private vehicle) to the domestic terminal of the Tribhuvan International Airport, where you board a Twin otter to Lukla (2,800m). It will approximately take 30-35 min to reach Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla which is commonly known as a gateway destination. If the day is clear, you will also get to enjoy the aerial view of the terrain which is simply a feast to behold.

On reaching Lukla Airport, we conduct a short introduction session with other crew members after which the breakfast is served at the lodge. At the same time the luggage is also prepared for the Porters. Once everything is set, we finally commence the ultimate walk following the stone pathway downhill that leads you out of Lukla towards Phakding after 4 hours walk.

The trail offers an experience of downhill and flat trail, prayer rocks (‘Mani’ in colloquial language), and the view of the colorful Lukla village. Upon reaching Phakding, you can freshen up and then our guides will take to for a short walk to the village or even hike up to the nearby Gompas (monasteries) that helps in necessary acclimatization. Then we get back to the lodge where the dinner. After dinner briefing regarding the following day’s trek will be made by the team leader. The night is spent at a lodge in Phakding.

After having breakfast, without wasting any time we set out from our lodge in Phakding and move towards Monju which is also known as the gateway to the Sagarmatha National Park. In between Phakding and Sagarmatha National Park you will get to experience the thrill offered by many suspension bridges, and the small settlements like Zapute, Toktok, Benkar, Chumoa and Monju. Here, you can also enjoy small tea houses and shops while your leader takes care of the necessary national park formalities at the entrance to the park. On entering the national park the trail drops steeply down to the river, cross another suspension bridge and continue walk to the high Hillary Bridge at the bottom of the hill. After the bridge the trail leads you uphill to the Namche Bazaar offering you the first great view of Mt. Everest, hidden behind Lhotse-Nuptse along with the view of Mt. Kusum Khangru. The night will be spent at a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Namche Bazaar, a gateway to the high Himalayas, is the main trading center and a tourist hub in the Khumbu region. This place is very popular for altitude acclimatization. Though this is a rest day it is highly recommended to keep moving and stay active for proper adaptation. Therefore, we organize a short hike to Thame, which is an old Sherpa village or visiting Khumjung/Khunde/Khongde is also considered a very good option to enhance acclimatization. Moreover, Namche Bazaar offers many ways to spend a day. You will have you enough time to visit the National Park Head office, Museum, and other monasteries. You can also have your own quality time at cafes, shops, bakeries or restaurants. The place also features other essential services like post office, hospital, government health post, 24 hour electricity and water supply and high speed internet access. You can also contact your family before heading towards the base of Everest Base Camp. This is night is also spent in a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

After having breakfast at Namche Bazaar, an easy walk on a flat trail through colorful prayer flags, several Tibetan Buddhist shrines (Chortens), Mani stone and Namche Gompa first leads us towards a small, old Sherpa village named Thamo. We explore this village and then walk towards another traditional Sherpa village named Thame which is situated at an altitude of 3,800m. We have our lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring this village- the monasteries (Thame Gompa) and the lifestyle of people. On the top of the village, you can also see the house of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. The night is spent at a lodge in Thame.

After having breakfast at the lodge, an easy walk first takes you to Marlung through Bhote Koshi River where we stop for some time to observe the spectacular view of the largest glacier in the Himalayas (Ngozumba glacier) and Kongde RI, located 4kms west of Namche Bazaar. From here 3-4 hours of vertical climb through the dry valley finally take you to Lungde. The trail, particularly offer a beautiful view of snow capped mountains and the valley. Once you get to Lungde, it is also recommended to hike above the lodge for the purpose of acclimatization. The night is spent at a lodge in Lungde.

Today, we get to one of the 3 major destinations of this trek- Renjo La pass. So, quickly having breakfast, we start to hike uphill for an hour and half followed by an easy walk that crosses Renjo River, Renjo Lake and Relama Tso. The trail further leads you through icy paths which take you to the top of one of your destinations in this trek – the Renjo La pass. This pass offers a grand view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Gokyo Lake and Rermo Pokhari Lake along with other snow covered peaks.

After spending some time here, the trail drops down towards our next destination of the day, Gokyo which consist of a quaint Gokyo valley, Gokyo RI and Gokyo Lakes. We get to the lodge rest for some time and then climb the short ridge to explore Ngozumpa glacier along with its glacial lakes. The night is spent at a lodge in Gokyo.

Though this day is considered as an easy day, it is best to start early because today we cross the Ngozumpa glacier and the ice in the glacier starts to melt faster, making the way more slippery as the sun gets stronger during the day. The trail descends towards Thangnag, where we stay overnight. We also climb a small hill at Thangnag for the purpose of acclimatization. The night will be spent at a lodge in Thangnag.

Today is the day to get to the second out of three major destinations of this trek – Cho La pass. The day is both adventurous and challenging as the trail first takes a steep ascent which then descends to the bottom of Cho La pass. The trail from the bottom of Cho La pass to the top is rocky, icy and slippery. Crossing this hurdle we finally reach the top that greats us with an incredible view of Cholatse and Mt. Ama Dablam along with Gokyo valley. After spending some time here, we leave the pass and make our way to Dughla crossing steep, rocky and icy path as well as a few crevasses. The night is spent at a lodge in Dughla.

After enjoying a hot breakfast, we scale up the sheer terminal of the Khumbu Glacier where you can see the memorials of those Sherpas who lost their lives on the glacier. You will also be greeted with a magnificent view of peaks like Pumori, Mahalangur Himal, Lingtren and Khumbutse. On crossing the Khumbu Glacier we gently hike up to Lobuche and continue to walk through rocky and windy trail leading towards Gorak Shep located at the bottom of Kalapatthar. The night is spent at a lodge in Gorak Shep.

This day takes you to the base camp of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. We have our breakfast and continue to hike up to the Everest Base Camp. We pass the pyramid sign from where you get an opportunity to see the top of the north ridge of Mt. Everest along with Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Pumori, and Mt. Nuptse. A small way up from here leads you to a place that allows you to experience 360 degree landscape of the hoary mountains. We further climb up to the top all the way through the torrent Changri Glacier in order to get a quick glimpse of Kala Pattar (Black Rock). Struggling your way up through this rock and glacial trail eventually leads you to the Everest Base Camp. You can spend some time taking pictures and appreciating the beauty offered by Mt. Everest and her sibling peaks. We then return to Gorekshep and spend our night at a lodge.

The major goal of this day is to watch the view of sunrise in the Himalayas. Hence, we start early (around 4am) in the morning. A couple of hours walk towards Kala Pattar will take you to the most popular viewing point of Kala Patthar (5,545m) that offers breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and Ama Dablam. The mountain glows golden as soon as the very first ray of the sun strikes the peaks. This view of the glowing mountains is nothing less than a feast to behold. We spend some time taking the picture of the magnificent views of the soaring mountain. After that we hike back to Gorak Shep, have breakfast and trace our way back to Lobuche where we spend our night at a lodge.

This day takes you to the last and the highest destinations of the entire trek – Kongma La pass. Hence, without wasting any time after breakfast, we follow the trail heads towards the east passing Khumbu glacier. On crossing the glacier and river the trail heads towards the pass situated at an altitude of 5,535m above the sea level. The cairn wrapped with colorful flags tells that you are on the top of this pass. From here the entire view is magnificent. After the hard climb to the top, the trail drops down to the valley full of glaciers- Chhukung valley. The night is spent at a lodge in Chhukung.

After having breakfast at the lodge, we walk downhill through the valley and head towards Dingboche. From here the trail drops downhill to Pangoboche village which further drops to the riverside where on crossing the bridge over Imja Khola the trail hikes up to Tengboche. In Tengboche, you can visit one of the most important monasteries in Nepal, where you can be a part of unique Buddhists ceremonies. The night is spent at the lodge in Tengboche.

From Tengboche, a steep descent takes you to the Dudh Koshi River, where we cross the first bridge over the Dudh Koshi River in Phunki Tenga. We then pass the village of Tashinga, Sanasa and finally reach Kyangjuma. The trail from here to Namche Bazaar is a piece of cake for all those trekkers who manage to make their way up to the three phases of the Everest region, base camp and Kalapatthar. We spend the night in Namche Bazaar, where you can enjoy a hot shower and loosen up your muscles. You also have an option to relax in the nearby restaurants, cafés and bakeries. The night is spent at a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

After the breakfast, we continue our walk downhill from Namche toward the second bridge across the Dudh Koshi River near the meeting point of Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi rivers. Then we walk towards Monjo where on fulfilling the formalities at the check post of the National Park at Monjo we continue our walk towards Phakding. We stop at Phakding for lunch and soon after the lunch we continue the trail that leads us to Lukla. Along this flat trail you can enjoy prayer stones, rhododendron and pine forest, prayer flags, Sherpa village as well as open plains. This is the last day of the trek. On reaching Lukla you can either spend your time with the rest of the crew members or look for some alone time to summon up the wonderful memories made during the past few days. The night will be spent at a lodge in Lukla.

Finally, it’s time to bid farewell to the Khumbu region of Nepal. The Sherpas will take your luggage to the airport and other airport formalities will be taken care of by the guides allowing you to enjoy your last breakfast in the Khumbu region. Once the aircraft arrives, you can directly board the plane and fly back to Kathmandu. A private vehicle depending on your group size will be awaiting your arrival in the airport. Your guide will then escort you to the hotel.

This is the last day of your trip. One of our company representatives will assist you to get to the airport as per your flight departure time if you have already booked your return ticket. However, if you are looking to extend your trip, We can make the required arrangements.
